Paint out at Upper Shirley Winery

I recently took part in a paintout and art event at the Upper Shirley Winery located mid-way between Richmond and Williamsburg Virginia. The weather was perfect and the spring colors were at their peak of the season. I enjoy getting outdoors to make color studies and find it helps inform my work in the studio. Although the paintout was scheduled around mid-day when the light tends to be rather flat, I was able to find a nice spot along the edge of the vineyard near the colorful buttercups.

In addition to the paintout at the vineyard, I was part of a group of artists that attended an event to benefit the Rice Rivers Center of Virginia Commonwealth University. An organization that does valuable research on the James River and other Virginia waterways.

My painting of an early morning sunrise on the James River was purchased by a couple who spend a lot of time enjoying the water.

This paintout was a great way to gear up for another season plein air painting.

Plein air painting at the lily farm

I was lucky to get outdoors this week with a painter friend to paint at a local lily farm. The lilies were in full bloom, and the color was spectacular!

There were so many great views, that I felt like a sketch of the composition on my painting would help keep me on track. Here's what I came up with...

The clouds were in and out all morning, but the color was still gorgeous.

My final painting. "Morning light on the Day Lilies" oil on canvas 11x14.

Portrait sketch of Tannee

Here is a portrait sketch done from life. I worked on it for a little over three hours. I like the way I am able to capture more accurate color this way, and find it very helpful when I am working on a more detailed piece. I try to do this about once a week if possible.

Portrait of Ashlyn.

Here is a recent study done in oil on canvas 12x16. This portrait took about three hours to complete. I had fun exploring edges with this painting.
